Master burglar John Dortmunder returns in the unlikely role of a modern-day Manhattan Robin Hood. When a bungled burglary drops Dortmunder through a skylight into an impoverished Tribeca convent, he finds himself at the mercy of a congregation of hard-nosed but devout nuns, who need the sort of aid that only a man of his peculiar talents can provide. One of their group, Sister Mary Grace, has been kidnapped by a brutal deprogrammer in the employ of her father, a business tycoon who rules his empire (and his family) with an iron hand. She is being held, Rapunzel-like, on the heavily-guarded upper floor of a midtown skyscraper. Dortmunder, threatened with exposure by the Holy Sisters, is charged with the seemingly impossible task of stealing back Sister Mary.
